For water treated through decontamination processes, TEPCO employs two advanced desalination technologies to effectively remove salt content, ensuring operational efficiency and prolonging equipment lifespan.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Desalination Technology

This technology leverages the properties of semi-permeable membranes, functioning as a precision filter that allows only water molecules to pass while efficiently blocking ions, salts, and other impurities. The system comprises multiple stages, including intake tanks, filtration units, reverse osmosis membrane modules, and treated water storage tanks, ensuring the production of high-quality fresh water.

Evaporative Concentration Desalination Technology

This method serves as a complementary solution to reverse osmosis. For the concentrated brine produced during RO treatment, evaporative concentration applies heat to further separate fresh water from highly concentrated brine. The system consists of intake tanks, evaporative concentrators, and cooling towers, maximizing water resource utilization through efficient separation.
